Pair This: NxNW Horse Heaven Hills Riesling with Fruit Roll-Ups & Plum Butter

We’re having an incredibly outstanding harvest here in the Willamette Valley, some winemakers and vineyard managers are saying this is the best year they’ve seen in over 20 years. We’ve had virtually no rain for several months and temperatures are much warmer than average. Our grapes are thriving, and so are all of Oregon’s other flourishing bounties.

For instance, take plums. The 2012 harvest has given us huge quantities of plums, so a local food and nutrition writer who also loves to cook, decided to put her over-the-top amounts of plums to good use by making fruit roll-ups and plum butter.

Through her weekly column on Eugene Daily News, called Pofta Buna!, European turned Northwesterner, Diana Glasser, shares her own recipes including nutrition facts. I love to follow her column and find ideal pairings for the interesting foods she creates. Ingredients needed for this weeks column? Plums, and that’s it, and there’s plenty of them in the Willamette Valley right now.

It didn’t take me long to think of a wine that would pair perfectly with Pofta Buna! Fruit Roll-Ups and Plum Butter: King Estate Winery 2011 NxNW Horse Heaven Hills Riesling. The ’11 NxNW Horse Heaven Hills Riesling is pretty dry, with apricot, fall spice and fresh baked bread aromas. Flavors are similar to the aromas, with an added touch of citrus on the crisp, refreshing finish. A perfect match with the sweetly fruity flavors of plums.
