In The Glass: Girardet Baco Noir 2010

One of the wineries I visited on my trip to the Umpqua Valley wine region that truly impressed me was Girardet. Owned and operated by father, Phillipe Girardet, and son, Marc Girardet, the tasting room at this winery is quaint and unassuming, but the wines being poured are big and bold; especially, the 2010 Baco Noir.

If you’re not familiar with Baco Noir, it’s a vine that originated in Bordeaux in the late 1800’s, and it was pioneered in Oregon in the 1970’s by Phillipe Girardet.

In the glass, the color is a deep, dark red. Aromas of plums, blueberries and pie spice become alive upon entry with the addition of chocolate and licorice flavors on the finish. I loved the silky, smooth texture of this wine along with the rich, bold flavors and medium body. With all the grilling my family will be doing this summer, I can imagine this is a wine we’ll be enjoying at each and every one of our Saturday Steak Nights.
