New Release: King Estate Luminous Pinot Gris 2011
No, your eyes aren’t tricking you. This is a Pinot Gris, and it is salmon in color. I too was thrown off a bit when I first saw the 2011 King Estate Luminous Pinot Gris, but the King Estate employee who poured a sample into my glass was quick to explain this eye-brow-lifting Pinot Gris.
He said the Luminous, although it resembled a Rose’, was not a Rose’ at all. Unlike other Pinot Gris, it was made using significant contact with the skins, allowing for it’s unique color and excellent character and complexity.
On the nose, the Luminous displayed herbal and floral notes with some bright fruit. My first sip revealed crisp, refreshing tropical flavors and a slightly spicy finish that was really enjoyable.
I often imagine where and when I would most enjoy a full glass of a wine I’m sampling during a tasting. This one conjured up images of watching the sun set out over the Oregon Coast while sitting beach side on a large piece of driftwood. The name, the color, the flavors – this is a coastal summertime wine. When I make it happen, I’ll be sure to post some pictures.
