Drink Now: 2009 Oregon Pinot Noirs
Rain, snow, cold, gray skies. It’s that perfect time of year to stoke the fire and warm up with a glass of Oregon’s revered red wine: Pinot Noir, specifically, 2009 vintage Pinot Noir.
When many of the ’09 Pinot Noirs were first released, I was a tad skeptical on their potential to age, and I remember thinking to myself, “better now than later.” Was I ever wrong.
Recently, Mike reached out to me and made me an offer I couldn’t refuse. So, I am officially the new Wine Goddess (okay, Wine Buyer) and Marketing Maven at 16 Tons. I’ll be spending my time at their entirely hip Taphouse location on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays (days may be adjusted as I get settled in). I will personally be hand-selecting all of the wine, and I have some incredible events planned; including, exciting and fun ways for wine enthusiasts to communicate directly with me—and occasionally—with special guests. Perhaps the 2009’s will be even better next year, but with the outstanding depth of character and flavor profiles of the wines I’ve recently sampled, I see no reason to wait. Please note: Have no fear when you see the lighter shades of the ’09 Pinots, the complexity is what it all comes down to.
2009 vintage Oregon Pinots that, so far, have blown my mind:
Four Graces Willamette Valley Pinot Noir: When I think Willamette Valley Pinot Noir, this is it. Aromas of cedar and dark fruit lead to a fruit forward entry with well rounded tannins, blackberries, cherries and earth. The lingering velvety smooth smoky finish is unforgettable.
King Estate Signature Pinot Noir: In the spring of 2011, I tried the ’09 for the first time, and loved it. I adored the gripping tannins and lingering finish, and it showcased Oregon’s famed fruit. A few days ago, I popped the cork on an ’09 I had been saving. The gripping ‘immature’ but fun tannins had mellowed into a more mature silky tannin, and the mouth feel was velvety smooth. Cranberries, strawberries and pie spice were complimented by a balanced acidity, and I savored every sip.
Beaux Freres Estate Pinot Noir: Spendy, but worth every penny…truly a special treat. One word: VELVET. Just buy it and drink it, you won’t be disappointed.
Boedecker Shea Vineyard Pinot Noir: Aptly named by Boedecker, the quintessential Pinot Noir, this is truly a quintessential gem to be enjoyed now. Forest floor, tobacco and dark fruit on the nose lead to layers of earth, blackberry and cherry flavors. Another one that I spent more money on than usual, but is worth more than its weight in gold.
Evening Land Estate Pinot Noir: Vibrant and lively, yet silky smooth and elegant, and absolutely worth the price. This is the best value Pinot Noir that you’ll find anywhere, and it’s delicious. Drink it now because the flavors are ambrosial.
We’re only in January of 2012, and this list will, without a doubt, grow immensely throughout the year. I’m looking forward to glancing back at the list in January of 2013.
