Event: Red vs. White – A Battle for Tastebud Dominance at Metrovino with Montinore Estate

Pearl District wine destination Metrovino will host an epic battle between two classic contenders: red vs. white. Montinore’s dueling vintners Ben Thomas and Stephen Webber will put forth their best pairings for each of five tasting courses specially designed by chef Dustin See. It’s up to the guests to determine the ultimate matches and, in the process, learn more about the art and science of pairing wine with food.

Montinore’s unique winemaking program makes it a perfect subject for a red vs. white competition. Along with their dedication to food-friendly wines, Montinore has separated winemaking duties, with Ben Thomas heading the red wine program and Stephen Webber heading the white wine program. This allows them to follow their individual passions and keenly focus their attention and skills.

Known for wine-friendly cuisine, Metrovino’s executive chef Dustin See has prepared a five-course tasting menu that will illustrate the surprise and potential of food pairings, designing dishes that could go with either red or white (think charcuterie, salmon, pork). Metrovino owner and wine director Todd Steele will test his chops, selecting the pairings for each course, but the ultimate judges will be the guests!

After a short explanation of the effect of wine attributes (acid, tannin, fruit, sweetness) on the palate, the winemakers will make a case for their wines and guests will vote on their favorite pairings.

If you’ve always believed in red with meat and white with fish, prepare to question conventional wisdom and come away delightfully surprised.
